On 1 October 2014 the Central Bank of Myanmar (CBM) granted provisional licence approval to nine foreign-owned banks seeking to establish retail operations in Myanmar. The nine banks now have twelve months to meet the commitments made during the licence bidding and application process. Licences will be issued to each provisionally selected bank once the Central Bank of Myanmar is satisfied that the license criteria have been met and the bank is ready to commence day-to-day operations.
The nine banks are:-
- Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd
- Bangkok Bank Public Company Ltd
- Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd
- Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Ltd
- Malayan Banking Berhad
- Mizuho Bank Ltd
- Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation Ltd
- Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation Ltd
- United Overseas Bank Ltd
